Anthony John Clarkson FRCN is a British nurse and healthcare official who serves as Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).
Clarkson trained as a nurse and began his career in clinical practice before moving into leadership roles within the National Health Service. He held senior positions at NHS Blood and Transplant, including Assistant Director and Chief Nurse for organ donation, and was appointed Interim Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation in 2018 before taking the role on a permanent basis.[1]
He has led national strategies to improve organ donation rates and transplantation services in the United Kingdom. Clarkson has also commented in national media on pressures facing organ transplantation services, including rising waiting lists and the need to increase donor registration.[2] He has acted as a spokesperson on organ donation in national media including BBC News and ITV News.[3][4][5]
In 2018, Clarkson was named Clinical Leader of the Year at the Health Service Journal Awards for his leadership in organ donation services, including workforce reforms and initiatives to increase donor consent rates.[6]
In 2020, he was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Nursing, recognising his contributions to nursing and healthcare leadership.[7][8]
