Antanas Pukas (born December 13, 1934, in Vepai, Panevėžys District) was an inventor and the creator of television sets “Šilelis” .

Biography

Antanas Pukas was norn in December 13, 1934 in a farmers family of Pranciškus Pukas and Antanina Pukienė, Panevėžys district, Vepai village. In 1945 together with the family was deported to Siberia (Komi ASSR). In 1946, the whole family escaped from Siberia and returned to Lithuania. The parents found guardians to look after their children so they could go to school. In 1950, the parents were deported to Siberia again. They returned to Lithuania only in 1958.

He finished school in Ukmergė in 1954. He graduated from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute in 1959 and the Riga Public Institute of Patents in 1967. In 1972, he completed a correspondence course at the Central Institute for Advanced Training in Patent Studies in Moscow.

From 1959, he worked as a lead engineer at the Special Design Bureau of the Kaunas Radio Factory (KRG). Later, he worked as a senior researcher at the Kaunas Research Institute of Radio Measurement Technology.

Engineering work

After joining the Special Design Bureau of the Kaunas Radio Factory (known as “Banga” from 1980), Antanas Pukas specialised in designing radio and tape recorder combinations. He was the main designer of the “Vaiva”, “Minija-4”, “Lietuva”, “Nida” and “Nida-3” models [1][2][3]. Later, when the factory began to focus only on television production, he worked on the development of all versions of “Šilelis” television sets[4]. In 1976, he registered a prototype of the “Šilelis” 403D portable television[5]. In 1981, he registered a prototype of the “Šilelis” 410D portable colour television[6].

Between 1964 and 1990, Antanas Pukas worked with researchers and co-inventors from the Kaunas Radio Factory and the Kaunas Medical Institute. Together, they registered 45 inventions and put 19 proposals for technical improvements into practice in electrical engineering and medicine.

Recognition

In 1988, Antanas Pukas and his co-designers received the Lithuanian SSR State Prize for developing the base model (2UPT-16-1) of the fourth generation of “Šilelis” portable television sets[7].
