ANIME Impulse is an American touring fan convention focused on Japanese animation (anime), manga, video games, cosplay, and popular culture.[1] Established in 2016, the convention operates under a multi-event touring model managed by IMPULSE UNIVERSE, an event management company.[2] Initially launched in Southern California, the convention series has expanded to hold annual or bi-annual events across multiple metropolitan areas in the United States.[3]
Unlike traditional standalone conventions, ANIME Impulse utilizes a co-location format where a single admission ticket grants crossover access to concurrent sister events, such as K-PLAY! FEST (focused on Korean popular music) and Collectors Expo (focused on trading cards and collectibles).[2][3]
History
[edit]Founding and Early Development (2016–2020)
[edit]ANIME Impulse debuted on January 16–17, 2016, at the Fairplex in Pomona, California.[4] It was originally launched as a specialized programming section alongside the annual Asian American Expo, allowing attendees shared access to both events.[4] The event was designed to integrate contemporary anime, gaming, and pop culture programming within the footprint of the existing cultural exposition to appeal to younger demographics.[4] The inaugural event featured panel appearances and meet-and-greets with international cosplayers.[5]
Expansion and Multi-City Touring (2022–present)
[edit]Following its early iterations in Pomona, the convention expanded its geographic footprint and structural format. Parent organization Impulse Universe introduced K-PLAY! FEST in 2022 to encompass Korean popular music, followed by the introduction of Collectors Expo for trading card hobbies.[2]
The convention subsequently expanded beyond its original Southern California market. It established regular events at the Santa Clara Convention Center for the San Francisco Bay Area market, and at the Anaheim Convention Center for the Orange County market.[2][3] By 2024, the touring circuit expanded to additional regional markets, including events in Phoenix, Arizona, and Seattle, Washington.[6] The circuit expanded further into Texas with an event at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas.[7]
Convention Structure and Programming
[edit]ANIME Impulse operates under a co-location ticketing model. General admission passes grant crossover entry to all concurrently running events at the venue, bridging anime fandom with K-pop and collectible communities.[3]
The core programming structure of the event typically includes:
- Exhibitor Spaces: A designated vendor hall and an "Artist Alley" for independent illustrators, crafters, and merchandise vendors.[2]
- Guest Appearances: Autograph sessions, industry panels, and meet-and-greets featuring voice actors, digital content creators, and professional cosplayers.[5]
- Digital and Virtual Content: Organized panels and virtual meet-and-greets featuring Virtual YouTubers (VTubers) from talent agencies such as NIJISANJI EN and hololive.[3]
- Musical Performances: Live music programming, including concerts by individual artists and domestic or international touring bands associated with anime soundtracks.[1]
- Community Features: Mainstage cosplay competitions, dedicated interactive video game areas, and itasha exhibitions (automobiles decorated with fictional character decals).[1]
