Aliya Chisti (born September 9, 1988) is an American politician.[1] She is the first Muslim person elected to public office in San Francisco's history,[2] and she serves as president of the Board of Trustees of City College of San Francisco.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Chisti was born and raised in San Francisco to Indian immigrant parents. She grew up in the Ingleside neighborhood and attended Lowell High School. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis in 2010, and a master's degree in education policy from Columbia University in 2016.[3] That year she was selected as a Fulbright Scholar in North Macedonia.[3]
Career
[edit]Chisti worked as a legislative aide in 2018 to then-Board of Supervisors President Malia Cohen, now California State Controller.[3][4] Chisti then oversaw the Free City College program at the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Their Families, which made City College tuition-free for San Francisco residents.[5]
In November 2020, Chisti was elected to the Board of Trustees of City College of San Francisco, becoming the first Muslim person elected to public office in the city's history.[2] She was reelected in 2024.[6] In January 2026, the board voted unanimously to appoint her board president.[2]
