Alex Jules is an American musician, pianist, singer-songwriter, music director, arranger, and producer. Based in Los Angeles, he has worked in film and television, touring, recording, and live performance. His credits include Joker: Folie à Deux, The Invite, and HBO's The Rehearsal, and he has worked with artists and filmmakers including Joaquin Phoenix, Nathan Fielder, Eric Idle, Katy Perry, Amy Sherman-Palladino, The Monkees, Denny Laine, and Al Jardine.
Early life and education
[edit]Jules attended the Long Island High School for the Arts before studying music composition at New York University, where he was a recipient of the Alan Menken Scholarship.
He later relocated to Los Angeles.
Career
[edit]Recording and songwriting
[edit]Jules began his career as a singer-songwriter, pianist, composer, and arranger. His debut solo album, Topiary, was released in 2019.[1]
During the mid-2010s, Jules worked with singer-songwriter Emitt Rhodes. He played piano and sang vocals on Rhodes' 2015 recording of the Bee Gees song "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", released as a Record Store Day single with producer Chris Price.[2] Jules also contributed to Rhodes' 2016 comeback album Rainbow Ends.[3]
Portions of Topiary were recorded at Rhodes' home studio in Hawthorne, California, where Rhodes had recorded much of his own solo work.[4][5]
Jules is also a founding member of the Los Angeles-based band Bebopalula, alongside Chris Price, Emeen Zarookian, and Ben Lecourt.[6] The group released its self-titled album Bebopalula in 2020.[7]
Jules has also appeared on recordings by Chris Price, Neil Hamburger, the Monkees, and Micky Dolenz. His credits include Price's Stop Talking and Dalmatian, Hamburger's Still Dwelling and Seasonal Depression Suite, the live album The Monkees Live: The Mike and Micky Show, and Dolenz Sings Nesmith.[8][9][10][11][12]
He also contributed to the tribute albums Garden of Earthly Delights: An XTC Celebration and Ram On: The 50th Anniversary Tribute to Paul & Linda McCartney.[13][14]
Film and television
[edit]Jules has worked in music preparation, performance, and direction for film and television.
For the 2024 film Joker: Folie à Deux, he worked with Joaquin Phoenix as a pianist and accompanist during pre-production and filming, assisting Phoenix with the film's musical material and accompanying him live on set. Music supervisor George Drakoulias introduced Jules to Phoenix early in the production process. Phoenix said that Jules adapted his playing to Phoenix's changing phrasing and dynamics during the live performances, allowing the actor to vary his approach from take to take.[15] The film's musical numbers were performed live on set with piano accompaniment rather than to fixed prerecorded tracks.[16] Jules also recorded piano for the film during post-production and appears on Joker: Folie à Deux (Music from the Motion Picture).[17]
Jules served as bandleader, keyboardist, and an on-camera musician for the second season of Nathan Fielder's HBO series The Rehearsal.[18]
He worked on the film The Invite, assisting Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde in preparation for a piano performance sequence.[19] He also served as pianist for an unreleased screen test starring Katy Perry and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino.
His other television work has included music direction and performance for Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington's On Cinema Oscar Special in 2024. He has also contributed music to productions including 1883, RuPaul's Drag Race, and Central Park.
Touring and live performance
[edit]As a pianist and vocalist, Jules has toured with The Monkees, Denny Laine, Joey Molland's Badfinger, and Michael Nesmith's First National Band Redux.[20]
In 2018, he joined Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz's Mike & Micky Show touring band on keyboards.[21] He later appeared on the live album The Monkees Live: The Mike and Micky Show on keyboards and backing vocals.[22]
His work with the Monkees also included serving as vocal director. Jules continued performing with Dolenz after Nesmith's death, including as pianist and backing vocalist on Dolenz's Headquarters anniversary tour.[23]
Jules has also toured as a keyboardist with Laine and Badfinger.[24][25]
He has performed with or alongside artists including "Weird Al" Yankovic, Nancy Sinatra, Rufus Wainwright, Jackson Browne, Al Jardine, John Sebastian, Peter Asher, Garth Hudson, Laurence Juber, Paul Shaffer, Richie Furay, and Chad & Jeremy.[26][27][28][29][30][31]
Jules has also worked extensively with Monty Python member Eric Idle as a music director, arranger, pianist, vocalist, and producer on live performances and recording projects. In September 2025, he joined Idle onstage at the Royal Albert Hall in London for the closing performance of Idle's Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, Live! tour.[32][33]
Jules also appeared with Idle in the 2025 music video Fuck Christmas: Eric Idle, credited as a member of "The Virtual Band".[34][35]
Concert production and music direction
[edit]In November 2023, Jules organized and music-directed the Denny Laine Benefit Concert for former Wings member Denny Laine at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.[36][37] The concert included appearances by Micky Dolenz, Denny Seiwell, Laurence Juber, Peter Asher, Paul Shaffer, Albert Lee, Puddles Pity Party, and Neil Hamburger.[38]
In 2025, Jules created and produced Let's Get L.Aid, a music and comedy benefit concert for Los Angeles wildfire relief held at the United Theater on Broadway. Jules also served as the event's music director and bandleader. Performers included Nancy Sinatra, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Eric Idle, Al Jardine, Rufus Wainwright, Tim Heidecker, and Paul Shaffer.[39]
Jules has worked closely with The Beach Boys co-founder Al Jardine on music, live performance, and concert projects. Among their collaborations was a concert built around a world-premiere live presentation of the Beach Boys' 1977 album The Beach Boys Love You, which Jules co-created and co-produced with Jardine.[40]
