Alberto Prunetti (born 1973 in Piombino) is an Italian writer and translator associated with contemporary Italian working-class literature.[1]
Raised in Tuscany, Prunetti worked for ten years in the food industry as a kitchen assistant and pizza chef before transitioning to full-time writing, translating, and editing.
In 2012, Prunetti published the novel Amianto. Una storia operaia ("Asbestos: A Working-Class Story") through Agenzia X.[2] The book addresses the life of his father, an industrial welder who died from occupational cancer caused by asbestos exposure.[3] The work was reissued by Edizioni Alegre in 2014 and by Feltrinelli in 2023. It inspired theatrical adaptations and was ranked in 2020 by the cultural magazine L'Indiscreto among significant Italian narrative works of the 2000–2019 period.[4]
In 2018, he published 108 metri. The new working class hero, a novel based on his experience as a cleaner in a Bristol shopping center.[5] The book was translated into English in 2021 under the title Down and Out in England and Italy, receiving coverage in publications such as The Times Literary Supplement[6], Jacobin[7], and the Daily Mail[8].
Together with Nel girone dei bestemmiatori (2020), these works comprise Prunetti's "Working Class Trilogy." In 2022, he published the essay Non è un pranzo di gala. Inchiesta sulla letteratura working class, examining working-class literature in Italy and Europe.[9]
In 2024, Prunetti published Troncamacchioni (Feltrinelli), which in 2025 was named a finalist for the Premio Campiello (Premio Selezione Campiello).[10]
His books have been translated into French, Spanish, Catalan, Greek, Swedish, and English.
Editorial and cultural activity
[edit]Since 2018, Prunetti has served as editor of the "Working Class" series for Edizioni Alegre, focused on fiction and memoirs related to working-class backgrounds.[11] The series has published works by international authors including D. Hunter, Anthony Cartwright, Cash Carraway, and Luisa Carnés, as well as the collective memoir of the ex-GKN Factory Collective of Campi Bisenzio.
Prunetti is also the artistic director of the Working Class Literature Festival in Campi Bisenzio, co-founded with the ex-GKN Factory Collective, Edizioni Alegre, Arci, and SOMS.[12]
