Advanta IRA
[edit]Headquartered in Clearwater, Florida, Advanta IRA Services, LLC is a private U.S.-based company that provides administrative and recordkeeping services for self-directed individual retirement arrangements (IRAs) and other qualified plans and savings accounts.[1]
In 2024, the Tampa Bay Business Journal described Advanta IRA as a multibillion-dollar self-directed retirement account administrator.[1] As of mid 2026, the company reports holding approximately $4 billion in assets under administration.[2]
History
[edit]Jack Callahan is the founder and president of Advanta IRA. With decades of experience in financial services and real estate, Callahan has spoken on self-directed retirement strategies and regulatory compliance.[3]
Advanta IRA was originally founded in 2003 and began operating as an affiliate of The Entrust Group under the name Entrust of Tampa Bay. Callahan added another location, Entrust of Georgia, located in Atlanta, in January 2009.[4]
The company changed its name to Advanta IRA Services, LLC in December 2011. It became independent of The Entrust Group’s franchise program in January 2012.[5]
Throughout its 20+ year history, Advanta IRA has grown in both client base and assets under administration. Advanta IRA was named to Florida State University's Seminole 100 list of fastest-growing alumni-owned or alumni-led businesses in 2020, 2021, and 2022, ranking 58th, 71st, and 55th, respectively.[6][7][8] The Seminole 100 list, which recognizes the fastest-growing companies owned or led by alumni of Florida State University, is presented annually by the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at Florida State University.
In 2024, the company relocated its corporate headquarters from Largo to Clearwater, Florida. According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, the move followed a period of operational growth.[1]
In 2025, Callahan formed Advanta Trust Company, Inc., a Nevada-chartered trust company established to serve as a qualified custodian for self-directed accounts.[9] As of 2026, client assets administered by Advanta IRA are held in custody by Advanta Trust Company.[10]
Services
[edit]Advanta IRA provides administrative services for self-directed IRAs and other retirement and savings plans. These accounts include traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs, solo 401(k)s, health savings accounts (HSAs), and Coverdell education savings accounts (ESAs).[11]
The firm administers accounts used for alternative investments in real estate, gold, private placements, private lending, and limited liability company (LLC) structures (commonly referred to as checkbook IRAs).[12]
Advanta IRA facilitates account setup, documentation, and compliance reporting in accordance with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations. The company does not offer investment advice or sell investments. Clients maintain full control over their investment choices and decisions.[13]
Educational Resources and Outreach
[edit]Advanta IRA produces educational content related to self-directed accounts and alternative investments, including webinars, podcasts, articles, and frequently asked questions addressing investment structures and IRS regulations. Representatives of the company participate as speakers on third-party podcasts and webinars focused on alternative investments and self-directed accounts.[14] [15] [16] [17]
Regulatory Compliance
[edit]Self-directed accounts administered by Advanta IRA are subject to federal tax laws and regulations governing individual retirement accounts and qualified plans, including contribution limits, required minimum distributions (RMDs), prohibited transactions, and reporting obligations.[18][19]
In an interview with TheStreet, Advanta IRA’s Vice President of Sales, Scott Maurer, stated that Advanta IRA performs administrative functions in accordance with these regulations, but does not sell or vet investments. Account holders and their financial team are responsible for due diligence and compliance.[13]
