Adrian Manole is a Moldovan cybersecurity engineer and the president of the Information Security Students' Association (ASSI) at the Technical University of Moldova (UTM). He is publicly associated with IRIS, an AI-assisted national digital defence platform launched in July 2026 by ASSI, and works as a cybersecurity engineer at the CyberCore research centre. He has also taken part in international democracy-technology programmes and Moldova's main cybersecurity conference.

Education

[edit]

Manole studies at the Technical University of Moldova, in the Faculty of Computers, Informatics and Microelectronics (FCIM).[1]

Information Security Students' Association (ASSI)

[edit]

Manole is president of the Information Security Students' Association (Asociația Studenților în Securitate Informațională, ASSI), a student organisation based at FCIM, UTM.[2] The association's vice-president is Ștefan Bîstrițchi.[3] The association's principal activities include the development of the IRIS platform and the co-organisation of the Digital Democracy Forum.

Digital Democracy Forum

[edit]

ASSI co-organised, with the Moldovan chapter of the European Law Students' Association (ELSA Moldova), the first Digital Democracy Forum, held on 4 May 2026 at Digital Park in Chișinău. Reported as the first national forum on digital rights and technology governance, it was expected to draw about 350 participants, including students, legal experts and representatives of public institutions and the IT industry. Topics included the integrity of online elections, personal data protection, the regulation of artificial intelligence and the fight against cybercrime. The programme ended with a panel on Moldova's digital resilience, and the organisers said they intended the forum to become an annual event.[4]

IRIS

[edit]

IRIS is a cybersecurity assessment platform developed by ASSI over about a year and launched on 6 July 2026.[3] Radio Moldova presented it as a national digital defence platform.[5] It is intended to identify and close security gaps in critical-infrastructure institutions and government services, and was presented as a response to the cyberattacks that targeted Moldova during the 2025 parliamentary elections, when about 14 million incidents were recorded.[3]

Design

[edit]

According to its developers, IRIS uses artificial intelligence to model the viewpoint of an attacker. It collects and analyses data about an institution from many angles in order to assess how secure it is, which attacks may target it and how it can best be defended. The platform was designed from the outset to integrate across all segments of an organisation's systems, and to scale from small websites and assets to very large infrastructures. The developers said AI serves as an assistant to the automation and infrastructure they built, rather than as the core of the system.[3][5]

Launch and deployment

[edit]

At the launch, Manole, described as a cybersecurity engineer at the CyberCore research centre, said the number of digital public services in Moldova was growing, which made them more accessible but also more exposed, and that attackers were already using AI tools to probe institutions.[3] Bîstrițchi said that IRIS would first be deployed and tested with partner institutions, agencies and companies, and that a version for the general public was planned afterwards. UTM rector Viorel Bostan said the university would be the platform's first beneficiary, and that the parties would define a partnership framework.[3]

Other activities

[edit]

Manole is a co-founder and CEO of LexChain, a student startup developing blockchain-based data protection for public institutions.[6] The company won the Democracy Tech Hackathon in Moldova in 2024[7] and took part in the Alliance of Democracies' Democracy Tech Entrepreneur Fellowship, presenting at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit on 14 May 2025.[8] In October 2025 LexChain published an analysis of cyber and hybrid interference in Moldova's 2025 parliamentary elections.[9]

Public appearances

[edit]
  • May 2025 – Copenhagen Democracy Summit (see above).
  • 2025 – Aspen Junior Regional Seminar, Aspen Institute Romania.[10]
  • May 2026 – Speaker at the Moldova Cybersecurity Forum (12–13 May, Chișinău), organised by the Cybersecurity Agency, listed as president of ASSI.[2]
