A Fox in Space is a fan-made animated science fiction web series based on the Star Fox series. Created by animator Matthew Gafford, the first episode was uploaded to YouTube on April 25, 2016. As of June 2026, Gafford has released two episodes of the series, with a planned six episodes in a "first season."[1]
Plot
[edit]A Fox in Space follows Star Fox, a group of mercenaries consisting of leader Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad, as they face off against Andross and rival mercenary group Star Wolf, led by Wolf O'Donnell. The series also explores the backstory of Fox's father, James McCloud.

Reception
[edit]The series has been well received by critics; its style has been compared to the work of Don Bluth[1][2], the 1981 animated film Heavy Metal[3][4], and 70s cartoons[5][3]. Sam Machkovech of Ars Technica described the series as "high quality", commenting that the series' "slow-but-simmering pacing still leaves room for a lot of impressive animation and beautiful scenery design."[1] Christopher Curley of The A.V. Club also praised the series' animation, as well as its "wry sense of humor" and worldbuilding.[3]
In 2026, David Flynn of Gaming Trend compared the then-upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 title Star Fox to A Fox in Space, citing their similar exploration of James McCloud's backstory.[6]
