American Institute of Architecture Students at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM AIAS) is the official student chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), serving students within the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP). Founded in 1969, the chapter promotes professional development, leadership, advocacy, service, and community engagement for architecture students. The chapter is part of the AIAS Midwest Quad.[1]
History
[edit]The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning was established in 1966, with architecture classes beginning in 1969. During that same year, students established the university's AIAS chapter. The chapter published an early student newsletter titled The Perspective, which later evolved into The Helvetica Medium and eventually The Third Coast Review.[2]
Since its founding, the chapter has provided architecture students opportunities to engage with the profession through networking events, lectures, firm visits, design competitions, conferences, and leadership opportunities at the local, regional, and national levels.
Activities
[edit]The UWM AIAS chapter organizes professional, educational, and social programming, including:
- Professional development seminars
- Firm tours and office visits
- Guest lectures
- Portfolio and résumé reviews
- Community service projects
- Annual Spring Ball
- Sandcastle Competition on Milwaukee's lakefront
- Attendance at AIAS regional and national conferences
- Leadership development programs
The chapter also supports participation in AIAS national initiatives, student advocacy, and professional engagement opportunities.[3]
National Leadership
[edit]The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee AIAS chapter has produced multiple members of the AIAS National Board of Directors. The chapter's national board history includes Catherine R. Miller, Nicole Kuhar, and Matthew Fochs, who each served as AIAS Vice President.[4]

Andrew Tillman was the first UWM student to serve two consecutive terms on the AIAS National Board, as well as the the first National Board Member in over two decades. .[5]

Chapter Presidents and Legacy
[edit]Throughout its history, the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee AIAS chapter has served as a leadership development organization for architecture students. Chapter presidents oversee organization operations, coordinate programming, represent student interests within SARUP, and serve as a connection between students, faculty, AIAS National, and professional organizations.
Several former chapter presidents have continued into leadership roles within AIAS, the architectural profession, and related professional organizations.

Legacy
[edit]The UWM AIAS chapter is recognized for its history of student leadership, professional engagement, and participation within the national AIAS organization. The chapter continues to serve as one of the primary professional student organizations within the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning, providing students with opportunities to develop leadership skills, engage with the profession, and represent the university on a regional and national stage.
