Hypermodernism

[edit]

The articles at Hypermodernism (art) and Hypermodernity have no inline citations, and they seem like they should be merged. Would be great for somebody with some experience with working on this type of article to take a look. Dreamyshade (talk) 01:38, 29 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

I have been updating the various "philosophies by region" in Europe. This has made me aware of a number of articles I think we should have on the philosophical side of wikipedia. Allow me to add more if I remember more.

via antiqua and via moderna as ways to say realism v. nominalism
'Mosaic physics' trying to apply physics to the Bible (Mosaic as in Moses)
"Clear and distinct ideas". Relevant to both Descartes and Peirce, yet this concept has no article all its own.
In reviewing the article premise, I noticed for some reason existential import is part of empty domain rather than its own article. Whether empty domain has something to do with it or not, it deserves its own article.
Husserl's book Logical Investigations has no article. I made one.
None of Pierre Charron's books have articles, eg Les Trois Vérités
A number of important philosophers have articles on the foreign language wikipedias which are lacking on the English wiki, such as Gottfried Ploucquet and August Friedrich Bök. Ploucquet is the figure between Leibniz and Lambert in the little bit of German logic at the time. Jules Lagneau was a major French "spiritualist" philosopher.
The German Thomists John of Lichtenberg, Heinrich of Lubeck, and Gerhard and Johann Sterngasse.
English emotion man Erroll Bedford.
American New Realist Walter Taylor Marvin
Swiss German dude Johann Konrad Pfenninger
Some articles I made myself were Guy De Bruès and Thomas Wizenmann and Thomas of Buckingham. If you can expand them, please do. Obviously, I don't know very much about them. There was an influential Dutch Cartesian with the name Tobias Andreae 200 years before the painter. He taught Clauberg, who is the link between Descartes and German philosophers. Cake (talk) 17:31, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
One of these days I'll actually get off my ass and write Overcoding and Microfascism to improve our representation of Deleuzean concepts. Simonm223 (talk) 17:34, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you are familiar with Deleuze then I would ask you to review any mention of him on the French philosophy article. I speak English, so I am no continental philosophy expert. Not sure what "duration of difference-in-itself" is getting at but I dare not delete it. Cake (talk) 17:36, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've now created something for all of the above. Cake (talk) 11:17, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Pacifism in France-request for assement

[edit]

Hi,

I would like an assessment of Pacifism in France as this is new to project.

Thanks in advance. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 16:16, 10 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Since I have been doing the whole history of French philosophy, I am focused on the pre-1914 section. It reads "Some have argued that oath(s) of allegiance were a particular point of contention". This is arguably "weasel words" with the "Some have argued". While I don't think it is bad in all cases, this seems to call for elaboration, even if in a footnote. Opposition to oaths makes me think of the Anabaptists. Pierre Widmer's article mentions a community of Anabaptists in Alsace. Not sure if any of that helps, but it seems working looking into. Cake (talk) 19:34, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
OK, that seems useful, thanks. To be honest, I don't really know what to add in terms of info as I really do not know these philosophic ideas in much detail. Could you please advice on centres of research in order to expand this or in order to write a useful footnote. Thanks for your advice. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 20:55, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am no expert myself, but I will see if I find anything. I just have some familiarity with the Mennonites. If you read the anabaptist article, you will see they did not believe in taking oaths. As I recall, they argued we should tell the truth all the time. So they don't swear to God in court to tell the truth. They think that means you are lying outside of court. Everybody else thought it meant they were lying in court. Desiderius Erasmus was the Anabaptists' favorite philosopher, at least of the canonical names in the history of philosophy, so excluding Menno Simons and so on. Balthasar Hubmaier was influential in Germany. I have not run into who led the Anabaptists in France, if anyone. And that is assuming that is what the article is talking about with oath-breaking. Pierre Widmer is the only person on wikipedia in the category "French anabaptists". Unfortunately, it mentions Alsace, which is a neat place I have (Catholic) ancestors from, but which I often find confusing whether to identify as Swiss, German, or French. Cake (talk) 21:10, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Only emphasizing the point, the Anabaptists in Alsace I can find are Germans like Pilgrim Marpeck and Melchior Hoffman, or Swiss with German names like Hans Reist and Jakob Ammann. See this gameo article. While they probably influenced French pacifism by being in Alsace, I imagine the wikipedia article wants French names to reference. The gameo article states Philippe-André Grandidier (1752-1787) was a historian who writes about the Anabaptists in Alsace. Cake (talk) 21:21, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is one interesting article about pacifists in France during the Revolution. Cake (talk) 21:46, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks so much for your advice, I have added a revision based on Quakers during the revolution as well as applications for the exception to oath taking. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 23:31, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
The League of Peace and Freedom should probably be mentioned too, at least it seems to me. It seems more mainstream than the Quakers, and though Swiss, it seems to be Swiss-French. Cake (talk) 03:37, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, thank you so much, added this, quite a good article by E.H Carr on it so used it as a reference. Would you say that the pre-1914 section is good now or would you add anything?
Thanks. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 10:02, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
The League and the Anabaptists seemed the things required to mention, so it seems good as far as the topics it covers. The League's article mentions the Revolution of 1848 as background. I think I would mention that, just as the Revolution is mentioned for Quakers. The conflict being avoided. Along with Quinet, there was also Hugo and Blanc. Furthermore, given that the League was in 1867, with Napoleon III, I wonder if the Crimean War played any role. Cake (talk) 16:19, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
The source I used pointed to changing politics so wrote about that, in terms of for a GAN how much more would you do?
Thanks. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 23:57, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am not sure I could review it for a GAN at the moment. At some future date, I can at least give the whole of it a copy-edit where I think it needs it. For another avenue of research, the French philosopher Pierre Poiret seems to have been influenced by the Mennonites. All the other names I can find seem to have gone to America, after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which I suppose you might possibly mention as well. That's where French history starts for an American, and of course a lot of religious radicals made their way across the ocean. It beats me why Mareen Duvall came to America even earlier. Cake (talk) 05:14, 13 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
A copyedit would be great! Thanks so much. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 13:22, 13 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Do you think those opposed to pacifism should be mentioned? I am thinking for instance of Georges Sorel. Just an idea. Cake (talk) 01:18, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your message
To be honest I'm not sure but I am more on the side of not doing so as many examples of similar article such as Christianity in Medieval Scotland and Freedom of religion in Norway do not do so.
I did some research and there is very little to nothing on the opposition to Pacifism Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 10:26, 15 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MisterCake I'd just like to ask for some advice on this, I wrote the article Pacifism in France during the inter-war period, would it be better to just merge the two articles and can I do this as I am the sole person who wrote this?
Thanks for your help. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 10:08, 12 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
It looks like you figured out how to redirect. Reading and writing on French philosophy history has led me to offer another idea. I understand that pacifism is a modern thing, so you might want to stick to more contemporary times. However, I also like delving into the history back to Creation, and showing the continuous progress instead of sudden revolutions. So what about the brutal Wars of Religion? While probably before the dawn of pacifism per se, hence the brutality, it seemed to lead to Pyrrhonism which includes beliefs like going along with the customs of the region where you happen to live, so as not to produce strife. It seems a relevant part of Montaigne, Charron, Sanches, Le Vayer. Of course, follow the sources, not what I say. But I offer it as another avenue of research. Cake (talk) 21:42, 20 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the suggestion, I feel as if it is revelant to the overarching subject of pacifism and do agree it is interesting but, I cannot find masses of detail on it massively influencing the French Movement. I have added it to the see also section as I do believe it is relevant but a little off piste for the French Article. Cheers. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 22:40, 21 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I made an article for Jules Lagneau by the way, if you know of anything to add. Johann Heinrich Lambert was also from Lorraine. Cake (talk) 22:05, 22 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Montyon Prize

[edit]

The two editors above this comment show an interest in French philosophy. So let me flag that the article for the Montyon Prize has been asking for more information for nearly 20 years now. Cake (talk) 18:09, 11 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

@MisterCake Hi there, I was just having a look at this article and was wondering wether it should be merged under the header Montyon Prize in Jean Baptiste Antoine Auget de Montyon. I have merged these two boldly in accordance with WP:BOLDMERGE. Please revert this if you disagree. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 22:33, 21 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
I was going to do this but, I will wait for your comment. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 22:33, 21 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Either one, as its own article, or part of Montyon's article, is fine with me. I won't oppose either decision. I assume Montyon's name was only later attached to the award, but I don't know the history. I also worry that it will be expanded, and so moved back to its own article, but I suppose that only matters once we reach that point. I was hoping wherever the article goes, somebody would list all the award winners. It would probably provide names of notable Frenchmen who do not have articles, and it would also provide clarity. Some years have multiple claimants, and I don't know whether they are completely misguided, off by perhaps one year, or if several awards were given out at once. Cake (talk) 23:26, 21 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes I'll probally not merge due to the list. The problem is there is not a massive amount of info. Equivalent-Text2598 (talk) 23:34, 21 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
